Powell, OH, Low-Maintenance Deck Provides Beautiful Golf Course View

This curved deck we built in Powell, OH, illustrates an important point for homeowners who are considering deck replacement. Don’t replace your deck without having your new deck designed by a company that specializes in custom deck design —a company like Archadeck of Columbus. Proceeding without a custom design that truly excites you would be wasting an opportunity to finally have the deck of your dreams.

These homeowners had a small wooden deck and wanted to replace it with a larger low-maintenance composite deck. When you replace a deck, not only can you choose different materials, you can also change the size, shape and total configuration of your deck. To use a well-worn phrase, you have a blank slate.

Archadeck Custom Deck Design Makes the Most of Your Deck’s Setting

Custom deck design is one of many areas where Archadeck outshines the competition. Our professional design consultant sits with you—yes, we can do this virtually—to explore the various design options you might consider. The most significant part of our deck design consultation is listening to you describe what you have in mind for your new deck. We’ll ask questions about how you plan to use your deck, and we’ll make suggestions based on your responses. It’s a collaborative process.

Lounge area on deck

For this deck replacement in Powell, OH, the homeowners wanted to take better advantage of their scenic view. Their home overlooks a golf course! Because they also wanted a larger deck, it made perfect sense to expand the deck’s footprint farther across the back of the home. That expanse allows space for more “front row seats” to the golf course view.

We also designed this deck to “be seen” from the golf course. Not all deck builders would have considered this design aspect. The graceful sweep of the deck’s unique curvilinear front edge presents an appealing view to anyone walking the golf course! The deck’s underside is thoughtfully concealed with attractive skirting. And the stone columns anchor the deck as part of the landscape, not an appendage from the house.

Finally, with this deck design, we more than doubled the size of the family’s deck. We designed the deck surface as two specific areas marked by a center parting board and decking boards running in different directions. In the dining area, with a grill, dining table and chairs, the boards run parallel to the house. In the lounging area, the boards run at an angle. This design creates a visual cue establishing two separate “rooms” on the deck, but the homeowners can always use the entire deck as one large space. It is the perfect setting for entertaining.

With Low-Maintenance Materials, Good Looks Aren’t Fleeting

Our clients were ready to move from a wood deck to a low-maintenance deck. They selected TimberTech composite decking in the Maritime Gray color. It’s the perfect contrast to the lighter siding on the home. For their deck railing they selected Westbury black aluminum rail sections with white vinyl sleeves on the rail posts. For the deck skirting, we used the same TimberTech Maritime Gray decking used for the deck surface and steps.

Side view of deck with stone columns

Construction of the deck’s beautiful stone veneer columns was more complex than you might think. Each column rests on a concrete pad, and we dug piers under the pads to ensure no movement of the stone veneer in the future. Then we built a wood frame for each column and applied the stone veneer. The homeowners chose Dutch Quality Stone. The color they selected is Sienna, and the specific pattern is Weather Ledge. The pillar caps are natural limestone with a smooth surface on top and a rock face finish around the edges.
